Online Pilates Workshop to Benefit Sunni Almond 8/8/18

Sunni and Scott

I give thanks every single day for my husband and our marriage, and as he gets into his 60s I feel some anxiety. My friend and colleague Sunni Almond, the vivacious creator of Going More Joe, lost her husband Scott suddenly and unexpected just a few weeks ago, leaving her without many financial resources.

From Sunni,

"What happened instead, after the doctor was going to turn us away this third time, was, I told the doctor that I wasn't taking Scott home until he diagnosed him. After the Ultrasound, the doctor didn't find a hernia, but Scott had spent three solid weeks in bed in pain, and I demanded an answer. I pressured him to do further diagnostics, so a cat scan was done, and stage IV inoperable colorectal cancer was found. It had also traveled to the lungs, lymph and liver."

Scott Almond passed at home, in hospice care, just 6 weeks later. I just can't even imagine.

After buying an advertising subscription on Going More Joe and donating to the Go Fund Me page, I thought, "what else can I do?" Well, what I can do is teach some online Pilates workshops and give half the money to Sunni!

Mastering the Mat - Sunni Almond Benefit

In this 2 hour Mastering the Mat online workshop for Pilates teachers, we will explore the basic and beginning Pilates mat, standing exercises, 2x4, and wall exercises, along with modifications and variations for special populations. We will also explore where we see these shapes on the apparatus. Just this one training will give you tons of ideas for your current and upcoming Pilates classes.

Workshop includes unlimited access to the workshop video (in case you can't make it to the live event) and a private Facebook group for questions and discussion.

And I am sending 50% of proceeds directly to Sunni to help with ongoing expenses!

What Is Pilates?

Many of my on line Pilates discussions now seem to be about how we define Pilates. The importance of how we as Pilates professionals speak about our business cannot be underestimated. Currently the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) is the first organization to try to standardize Pilates. According to their webiste,

Founded in 2001, the Pilates Method Alliance is the professional association and certifying agency for Pilates teachers. For the past decade, Pilates teachers from around the world have worked together to create a unified community, to share knowledge and information, and most importantly, to establish the practice of teaching Pilates as a profession. To that end, in 2005 the PMA launched the only third-party professional certification exam in the Pilates industry. We urge you to join this movement to elevate the status of Pilates teachers and establish a new profession by becoming a PMA® Certified Pilates Teacher.

But many pilates teachers, including myself, have elected to not take this exam, in part because we are not sure we agree with their definition of Pilates. Is it simply a series of exercises that can be broken down biomechanically? Or is it a way of moving in the world?

Who decides?

Pilates Certification Q & A

Dear Lynda, I have been a member of a fitness center since 2002 and regularly attended their Pilates classes. I also practice Pilates several times a week in my home. I have recently moved to the Albany, NY area and would like to become a Certified Instructor( Beginner Mat to start). Can you please recommend some programs in my area? Also, do I necessarily have to be a client(member)at a facility before I can start a training program? I would like to start training ASAP. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much. Karen

Answer: Dear Karen,

It is good that you decided to ask before jumping into a Pilates certification program. I suggest the following programs which all start with mat and also progress into Pilates equipment if you decide to go that route. Whether or not a studio would like you to take lessons with them before entering a program is up to the studio. Most Pilates studios do not have a traditional gym membership structure. I never did, but cannot speak for others. Look for:
