Instagram Academy 2.0 from Amanda Tress

Back in August of this year I joined Amanda Tress' Instagram Academy course. I had decided to get my Instagram game on, but was really unclear about how to proceed. I managed to get my Twitter follower count over 10,000, and have some nice interactions on my Facebook Page, but Instagram just eluded me.

And then I met Amanda Tress, business marketing and social media expert, super-Mom, and fellow Fitfluential Ambassador.

I joined her IG Academy and quickly learned what I was doing right, what I was doing wrong, what I wasn't doing, and how to fix that. My follower count has more than doubled, and while it has been slow, that is more due to my inconsistency than anything else.

That said, Amanda is about to launch a new Instagram Academy group starting November 30! And if you think my IG Academy 1.0 experience was awesome, Amanda has linked up with marketing expert Lindsey Murray and is now in version 2.0.

You will have daily deliverables, a follow along eBook, and access to a private Facebook group for sharing your work and asking questions. For me, this course was exactly what I needed!

If you use what you learn in Instagram Academy 2.0, you will increase engagement and sales in your business.

Sign up for Amanda Tress' Instagram Academy 2.0 right now for only $97.

Summer Vacation In Mystic, CT

Our Summer Vacation In Mystic, CT Was Relaxing and Wonderful

Sometimes you just need to get out of town, and summer vacation is the perfect time.

Mystic, CT

Mystic, CT is a great destination from NYC. It is about 2.5 hours on the train, and about a 3 hour drive. There is plenty to do for adults and children, with great shopping, great historical Seaport and Navy sites, a nice Aquarium, plus hiking, fishing, boating, and swimming. There are interesting, good restaurants and the people are just lovely. Driving is easy, walking is easy, and all the major sites are within a two mile radius.

Mystic Seaport

NYC is Awesome, but Tough to Live In

I love NYC, but am finding it increasingly more difficult to live in. My neighborhood (the undefined area in the middle of FIDI, Tribeca, South Street) is generally quieter than many, but even here it is hard some days to steel myself up to leave the house.

Seriously, every time I go outside I have to prepare myself. I have to look out for pedestrians (especially tourists) who are so intent on their cell phones or maps that they don't look at the street and people at all. I have to be aware of drivers who don't stop at corners, or who try to run a yellow or red light irrespective of human beings in the way (you see, most drivers who kill pedestrians in the city get off free). I don't even worry about crime so much as getting killed or injured by people just not paying attention!

And then there is the noise - the construction sounds which never go away, the subway noise, the street preachers, and the folks whose cell phones allow them to have intimate and angry conversations on their phones in public. Oh yes, a one-sided crazy fight is always awesome first thing in the morning!

Summer Vacation Planning

So this year we had some vacation parameters, and Mystic, CT met every single one. We wanted a place that:

  • We can get to by train and is pedestrian friendly
  • Has enough historical sites and tourist stuff to keep us occupied
  • Is near water, but not a beach
  • Has major hotels where we could get expected service, like room service

Mystic, CT is A Great Summer Vacation Destination

Mystic, CT met all of these requirements.

Mystic Seaport Sunset

  • We took Amtrack from and to Penn Station.
  • We had a great time at the Seaport, the Aquarium, and the other sites.
  • We sat by the water, but didn't have to deal with messy beach.
  • We stayed at the Hilton, which met all of our requirements and more (even under renovation). Here is my Trip Advisor review of the Hilton Mystic with photos.
  • We bought Mystic Passes, which gave us multi-day admission to the Seaport and Aquarium, a 20% discount at the Hilton, and discounts at most of the shops we went to, including Vault Coffee and Mystic Army Navy.

Vault Coffee Sign

In addition, we had fabulous coffee every morning at Vault Coffee Roasters, great food and drinks at the Engine Room, grilled cheese at Bleu Squid, I had a great Pilates class at Aproma Studios, and we saw the last free Blue Monday blues concert at the Mystic River Park.

We brought home clothing from the Bass and Van Heusen outlets, jacket and gear from Mystic Army Navy, soap from Becca Rose Natural Body Care, Smoking Lamp coffee beans from Vault, and fudge from the General Store. And, yes, some hats and T-shirts.

Walking was interesting, as cars stop for pedestrian crossings, even when there is no light or stop sign. It took us a day or so to realize that cars would actually wait and not try to run us over! There are a lot of classic cars in the area, and we saw some beauties. The Hilton has a shuttle service, so we were always able to get a ride to town or the Seaport and back when we didn't want to walk.

We Will Return to Mystic, CT

We plan to return to Mystic, CT. There are more things we want to do and more restaurants we would like to eat in. I may try to get there in the Fall, as the colors will be stunning.

Have you ever been there? Leave a comment and let me know how you liked it.

BODYPeace Movement - Love Yourself

F.A.T-BP-Bloggers-e1424015080916.jpg

The BODYPeace Movement teaches self-love, spirituality, and honesty. Be at peace with your body!

If I learned anything in the past few years, it is the importance of self-love and honesty in my relationship with myself. Seriously! I lie to myself all the time.

Don't we all?

I tell myself things are fine when they are not. I tell myself that I will be in control and then I am not. Hell, many times I hate myself over these lies and the discomfort they bring.

I started working through some of these issues in my MindMap coaching training (more on this later, as I am still waiting for my final paper grade). And then, in the middle of those coaching loops, I met BODYpeace founders Heather Waxman and Kasey Arena via Fitfluential.

BodyPeace - Your Thoughts

Heather is a spirituality and meditation guru, while Kasey is a personal trainer and maker of Power Cakes. They have both been through times where they hated their bodies and tried to control things with disordered eating and crazy exercise. Between the two of them, they know quite a bit about the body, mind, and spirit.

BODYPeace stems from the premise that our bodies are not the problem, it is our thoughts about our bodies that are the problem. We attach negative emotions and ideas to our body that cause us harm.

BODYPeace is a 30-day inspirational journey that will help you shed shame and guilt and find lasting peace with your body. Through personal stories, meditations and transformational exercises, you will gain all the tools you need to break free from food jail and body prison.

bodypeace

Once you purchase the BODYPeace book, you have access to the awesome extras - downloadable meditations, EFT (Tapping) videos, and exercise videos. There is also a private Facebook Group which offers more support and a place to share and vent.

This is a 30 day journey that involves guided meditation, journaling, joyful movement, and good food. The BODYPeace journey is not easy, and will have you really facing some difficult stuff, but offers the support to help you through.

I encourage you to try this program. We all know deep inside that "the thing is not the thing" (thanks Dax Moy). When we heal our relationship with ourselves, then working with our bodies becomes a joy instead of a burden. In the end, everything changes!

Marketing 101 for Pilates, Fitness, Yoga Teachers - 17 Sept 2014

Marketing 101 for Pilates, Fitness, Yoga Teachers - a 3-part workshop series led by Lynda Lippin that will teach you how to increase your value in a very crowded marketplace.

Episode 1 - Teaching Out of Your Comfort Zone

Wednesday September 17, 3-4:30pm at Real Pilates, 177 Duane Street, New York, NY 10013

The pilates, fitness, and yoga markets have enjoyed unprecedented growth over the past decade, which is a wonderful thing!
But now, as trainers, we are facing more competition within our industry. And with clearer certification pathways, there are more certified trainers on the market now than ever.
  • How can you distinguish yourself in this crowded marketplace?
  • How can you make more money, increase your quality client base, and shine in your field?
  • Have you dreamed about working overseas?
  • Wonder what skill set you need to have to land a great job inside or outside of the US?
  • And finally, have you ever wondered how to attract and maintain steady, standing, high income clients?

Learn how in this 3 part Workshop series. Each month I will take on an important aspect of business and marketing for personal trainers, pilates, and yoga teachers.

I just received this email from Pilates Teacher Lenny Reisner, who took this workshop series in the Spring. Note that he didn't even have a website before taking the workshops.

Hi Lynda

Hope all is well with you.  I met my income goal for the first time and am only looking up.  I owe thanks to you for your guidance in those workshops.

Best Lenny

Would you like to meet your income goals? Be busier? Have better clients?

If this is your first time visiting Real Pilates, use code LLGIFT at checkout and you will receive a lovely welcome gift when you check in!

This month I discuss travel - teaching outside of your studio or gym, outside of your city, and even outside of your country!

As someone who taught at the A-list Parrot Cay resort for 4 years, and who recruits trainers for high-end spas overseas, I have some great insight into what they are looking for and how to build your skill set enough to join that league.

See you there!

Episode 1 - Teaching Out of Your Comfort Zone
Wednesday, September 17, 3:00 – 5:00pm
There is a lot of call for trainers who will travel. This travel can be domestic or international, and includes subbing in other studios or in hotels/resorts, making outcalls of any kind (to hotels, private homes, or to train an entire family), picking up traveling clients or short-term residents, and traveling with a client.  We will also discuss how to find overseas positions, including issues regarding work visas, relocation, temp work, and the dangers of “working fitness vacations”.

Review: Acoustibuds Sport Tips EPB (Ear Pod Bud)

Apple_EarPods.png

Acoustibuds Sport Tips EPB work as well as the standard Acoustibuds - comfortable with great sound!

5/5 Stars - You Must Try Acoustibuds!

I was contacted by the PR folks at Acoustibuds recently asking if I would be willing to review the new Acoustibuds Sport Tips EPB, specifically made for the Ear Bud Pod as well as all forward facing ear buds.

I enthusiastically said YES!

Several years ago I had the privilege of trying the original acoustibuds, and I loved them. They increased the sound quality of my classic ear buds, while at the same time making them more comfortable with less slipping. I gave acoustibuds a great review on Blogcritics.

The new tips have a slightly different shape to accommodate the forward facing speakers, but otherwise were relevantly similar. Like the originals, the new Acoustibuds Sport Tips EPB come in several colors and sizes. The part that goes in the ear looks the same. It is the connection to the ear bud itself that changed to suit the new ear bud design.

Apple_EarPods

They are very comfortable and help the ear buds stay in your ear, with no slipping even during exercise. The Acoustibuds also improve the sound quality. This is really noticeable if you use the Acoustibuds for a few days and then try plain ear buds again.

At a MSRP of $14.99 for a set of two, Acoustibuds are a totally affordable way to increase the sound in your iPod and other ear buds. I was happy to get a set free to review, but would also happily pay $14.99 for these.

You must try these!

Depression Invasion

FortJay.jpg

Depression invasion!

We had a wonderful day, went to sleep, and I woke up to a completely different husband.

It is only in the past few years that I truly understand that hubby has always been very very depressed. And depression sucks.

I thought it was me.

You see, in the past I used to blame myself. Since normal people do not just wake up in a hateful place for no reason, it had to be me, right?

I mean, I burnt the toast, didn't I?

And I forgot to take the butter out.

I didn't write down that ATM withdrawal and overdrew the account.

And my step-son freaked out and screamed for his mother all night.

So screaming, spitting, throwing, breaking, cursing, and then finally going to bed for a few days was an appropriate response, right?

My mother was bipolar, showing me both mania and deep, suicidal depression. I know not from appropriate responses.

And I would act out too, mind you. I screamed, broke things, cursed, and shook with anger. I often had a Bad Day.

I thought people were entitled to bad days.

About 10 years ago I started to work on myself. I kept journals, started a gratitude practice, and made a concerted effort to tell the truth always.

I dug for the positive, gave out lots of compliments, and started to forgive everyone, including my parents and myself.

I stopped holding grudges. I realized how much of my behavior was learned from my mother.

And I started to live a better life.

Suddenly I had more energy, now that I wasn't spending so much on anger, resentment, and grudges.

Suddenly I had more money, now that I was giving and spending appropriately and not either hording it or throwing is away.

Suddenly I had more opportunities, as my light grew and attracted others.

And suddenly, my marriage was better, as I forgave hubby and myself, stopped holding on to anger, and started telling the truth.

Hubby was still depressed.

Yup.

Not as angry, not as confrontational, but still depressed.

And even after we moved to NYC, with stable income, and he has written and published two books to some critical acclaim, he is still depressed.

Yesterday he was fine.

Truly! We took the ferry over to Governor's Island, explored Fort Jay and Castle William, had a picnic, got caught in a little rain, saw a huge hawk, and ordered sushi for dinner. A great day.

And he woke up this morning depressed.

Bad depressed. Like, "my life sucks and nothing matters and I hate my life" depressed. He is in bed as I type.

I feel like he has been invaded.

Today is a depression invasion!

How long will it last?

Who knows?

He will assure me that it is not my fault. And I know it isn't.

But it still sucks.
