I Tried the New Sunwarrior Sol Good Protein Bars

I Tried the New Sunwarrior Sol Good Protein Bars

Back in August I received a press release from Sunwarrior announcing their entry into the bar market with Sunwarrior Sol Good protein bars. I requested and received samples of all four new flavors - Cinnamon Roll, Salted Caramel, Blueberry Blast, and Coconut Cashew.

Sol Good Nutrition

Sōl Good Protein Bars are USDA Certified Organic, soy free, gluten free, non GMO, dairy free, and vegan. Each bar has 12-18 grams of fiber, 17-19 grams of protein, and 3-7 grams of sugars  and is under 255 calories per bar.

The bars do leave you feeling replenished and full, especially after a good workout or a full morning of training clients.

Sol Good Flavor

I tried all four flavors - Cinnamon Roll, Salted Caramel, Blueberry Blast, and Coconut Cashew. Some are iced and some are not.

sunwarrior sol goodWhile these bars are mostly sugar-free, they are extremely sweet. Sunwarrior uses erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and stevia as sweeteners, and both of these are intensely sweet with a slightly bitter edge. I would prefer less sweetener.

The flavors were pretty spot-on, but again way too intense. The cinnamon in the Cinnamon Roll flavor left my mouth burning, and combined the intense sweetness, all I wanted to do was drink something to get the taste out of my mouth.

Sol Good Texture

The texture is also very odd. The bars look and feel very formed and processed, with a texture that I almost cannot describe. Think smooth, yet grainy. Solid, yet chewy and gummy. The mouth feel and texture, for me, were a bit off-putting.

The Upshot

Sunwarrior Sol Good Protein bars contain a large amount of protein and fiber, and to get that much packed into a small bar will mean some funky texture issues. To make them sweet enough to get past the texture, but keep them sugar-free, means a whole lot of low-glycemic sweetener, which leads to some bitterness and a drying mouth-feel.

That said, very few vegan bars will give you this much nutrition in one serving. And the cost is only around $3.00 per bar.

I prefer a less sweet, more natural bar with lots of seeds and nuts and very little sweetener. But, as I mentioned above, these bars did replenish me after working out and contained enough fiber with the protein to keep me full. And, you will drink plenty of water since they are so sweet!
